WORKSHOP: Floating Treatment Wetland Design / Build / Install Workshop
New Paltz has a long tradition of leading revolutions. The next may be environmental. As part of the 250th anniversary of American independence and Revolutionary New Paltz, we invite neighbors and friends to a free, hands-on workshop exploring an innovative solution for cleaning polluted waterways: Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs).
FTWs are small, buoyant structures made from natural, sustainable materials and planted with native species like sedges and willow. These floating gardens remove excess nutrients, heavy metals, and pollutants from water—helping combat harmful algal blooms—while restoring habitat for birds, fish, and other wildlife.
The workshop will be held at the historic DeJoux House on Springtown Road and led by FICTILIS Studio as part of the Wallkill Futures exhibit at Unison Arts. Participants will help design, build, and install low-cost FTW prototypes using locally sourced materials. These will be launched in the pond and monitored over six months to track water quality improvements.
Attendees will learn design principles, materials, planting, and water testing—gaining the tools to build their own FTWs and contribute to a grassroots water restoration movement.
Admission: Please register in advance. This workshop is free, but if you want to support our ongoing research, or if you come away feeling you learned something valuable, please consider donating to FICTILIS, a fiscally-sponsored project of the nonprofit Fractured Atlas: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/fictilis-public-projects-and-curated-exhibitions].
Capacity: 20 people
Supplies: Please bring sturdy shoes and gloves.
Accessibility: This event will take place in the grounds of DeJoux House and is not easily wheelchair accessible. The event will include physically making prototype floating islands and will require close work (glasses), gloves, sturdy shoes/waterproof boots etc. It will take place outside so dress appropriately for weather.
Parking: Driveway of 374 Springtown Road, New Paltz, NY and 377 Springtown Road, New Paltz, NY (opposite driveway).
Weather: This event was orginally scheduled for May 9th, due to the rain it is rescheduled to May 16th.

WORKSHOP: “Cravings Aren’t About Willpower,” with Jackie Meyer, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES at Green Bar
A practical, science-based look at cravings, what causes them, and how to work with your body instead of against it.
Join us and learn to understand your cravings and to respond without guilt or restriction.
We’ve been taught to think of cravings as a lack of willpower. Something to ignore, control, or “be better” about.
But what if that’s not true?
In this session, Registered Dietitian Jackie Meyer brings nearly two decades of experience in women’s health and insulin resistance to a conversation most people haven’t had yet. Instead of fighting cravings, she’ll help you understand them.
We’ll break down the real drivers behind cravings, including blood sugar, stress, sleep, and habits, and why certain times of day can feel harder than others. More importantly, you’ll learn how to respond in a way that actually supports your body, without restriction, guilt, or starting over on Monday.
This is a realistic, science-based approach to feeling better in your body, built around foods you enjoy and habits that are actually sustainable.
As always, this isn’t a lecture. It’s a conversation.
The evening will include time for questions, discussion, and a Green Bar experience tied to the topic, featuring menu items like the Sunrise Sourdough and Solar Flare Smoothie.
Jackie Meyer has been Women's Health Registered Dietitian for over 19 years. By specializing in Insulin Resistance, she is able to help women control their blood sugar, support their hormones, and improve their gut health with diet and movement they enjoy.
Admission: Register in advance, $25.00.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible
Parking: Free Parking in rear, street parking and municipal lot.

WORKSHOP: “What is Sustainable Agriculture?” with Ellen Conti-Phillies Bridge Farm at Green Bar
Join Us to learn what SUSTAINABLE actually means with Ellen Conti, Director of Phillies Bridge Farm Project! A grounded conversation about what “sustainable” actually means.
We hear the word sustainable everywhere. At the grocery store, on menus, in conversations about health and the environment. But what does it actually mean? And how does it show up in the food we eat every day?
This session is a chance to slow down and take a closer look.
Ellen Conti, Director of Phillies Bridge Farm Project, brings a practical, local perspective to the conversation. With a background in agriculture, renewable energy, and hands-on farm work here in the Hudson Valley, she’ll walk us through what sustainable agriculture really looks like beyond the buzzwords. https://www.philliesbridge.org/
We’ll talk about how food is grown, what it takes to build a system that supports both people and the land, and why it matters more than most of us realize. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of where your food comes from and a few small ways to think about your own choices differently.
As always, this is not a lecture. It’s a conversation.
The evening will include time to connect, ask questions, and spend time with others who are thinking a little more intentionally about how they live, eat, and show up in their community.
Admission: Register in advance, $25.00.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible
Parking: Free Parking in rear, street parking and municipal lot.
